Sarah Richards
Sarah Richards has over 30 years of experience sculpting wildlife, and her passion for her work is apparent to all who meet her. Sarah believes that her way of feeling connected to the world around her is through touch and feel.
Through a lifetime of sculpting wildlife she has developed an intimate understanding and connection to each one of her subjects, and you can see this come across in her work. Sarah’s attention and ability to achieve fine detail and texture in her work are striking.
Perhaps most notably, her mastery of patinas make her bronze work some of the most colourful and vibrant in a space. Achieving each colour is a refined part of the artform, as what you see in the final product is an intricate play between a multitude of chemicals and the reactive nature of the raw bronze. The oxidation process brings out all of the different colours you see in a finished work, which will be sealed in with a wax finish.
Sarah’s wild dog series captures this beautifully; each wild dog piece has four interwoven chemicals that bring out the bronze colouring and helps her art to achieve its lifelike mimcry. Sarah has previously worked with the Wildlands Conservation group as well as the WESSA Umgeni Reserve.
Featured Art
Day Dream
Patinaed Bronze Sculpture
Sarah normally included herself in an accentuated state in many of her pieces as well as a natural element. In Day Dream Sarah is leaning on a bed of flows that is floating upwards and away just like the wind. Just as any Day dream, Sarah is conveying the message that all things are possible.
BLACK RHINO MAQUETTE
Patinaed Bronze Sculpture
An industrial finish to a beautifully sculpted miniature black rhino by Sarah Richards.
Grazing Nguni
Patinaed Bronze Sculpture
The beautiful Nguni Cattle are special to the indigenous people of South Africa. The individual animals are uniquely patterned with combinations of light brown, dark brown, black and white.
Each of the 16 of this edition will have a different patina, representing the variation seen on our rolling hills.
