About the Artwork
The Space Between Us by James Cook is a deeply emotive bronze sculpture that captures the magnetic push and pull between two people in love. The male and female figures face one another in an intimate pose, yet their bodies never quite touch. At the core of each figure, a polished, mirror-like bronze surface replaces the face and torso, creating a powerful contrast between textured, organic form and smooth, geometric abstraction. This reflective bronze invites the viewer to see themselves in the work, echoing the way we often discover our identity through closeness with others. The piece speaks directly to themes of longing, separation, and emotional intimacy.
Cook created this sculpture while travelling alone through Europe, physically distant from his partner. That distance became the emotional source of the work. The Space Between Us expresses how absence can intensify connection, and how desire and memory fill the void between people. The mirrored bronze surfaces do not only reflect light – they reflect feeling and evoke intimacy, yearning and self-discovery.Â
Cook spent over a year developing the casting process to bring this piece to life.
